Carole Sund’s wallet and credit cards were found in Modesto on Feb 19. The FBI acknowledged Feb 21 that the disappearance was being treated as a kidnapping and a $250,000 reward was offered. Their rented Pontiac was found burned near Long Barn in Tuolemne County on Mar 18 and 2 burned bodies were found in the trunk. Cary Stayner, motel maintenance man, later admitted to the murders and faced trial in 2002. Stayner was convicted on Aug 26 and was sentenced to death Dec 12.
