Whether you are interested in trying your hand at a new type of position or you want to completely change your industries, it is very important that you identify your transferable skills. Also, just because you’ve not spent years in a particular career doesn’t mean you cannot give another a trial.
While trying to switch careers or positions at your workplace, it is important to note that there are some specific sets of skills that do not belong to a particular niche, job or industry. Before we dive into identifying your transferable skills, first, let’s look at the meaning of transferable skills.
Transferable skills are general skills that are relevant and helpful across different areas of life, either socially or professionally. They give you the ability to be flexible in case you want to change your job. You will not have to stress yourself before you’d be able to identify them because you have developed the skills throughout your life from your home background, upbringing, hobbies, interests, previous experiences, projects and jobs.
Some transferable skills are listening, teamwork, problem solving, work ethics, communication, research, leadership and more. So, what are the steps to identify your transferable skills?
First, think about your shining moments.
Moments you felt great about yourself; moments you received praise from your co-worker or boss; and moments you were able to solve problems without having to contact anyone. These determine the skills you used to produce with great zeal.
Second, try to understand your past and current job descriptions.
You can use the opportunity to check through your resume, and take some time to jot down the unique skills you developed while carrying out your responsibilities.
Third, question yourself.
You can engage yourself by asking questions such as, “What do I love to do? What aspects am I good at? How did I overcome the challenges I’ve faced? What are my personal qualities? What are my biggest successes?” Then, you can use your answers to highlight your transferable skills. The aim is to understand what you can offer your employer.
