Carrots are root vegetables. They have a wealth of antioxidants and offer many health benefits. The best known colour is orange, but they also come in other hues, including purple, yellow, red and white. They taste different depending on the colour, size and where it is grown.
According to Dr. Sheela Manglani, a Bangalore based nutritionist, “carrots are good source of beta carotene which is a natural pigment that is used by the body to make vitamin A and it has a good amount of fibre.” Carrots are juicy and crunchy. Here are some of its health benefits.
- They are good for the eyes. As stated earlier, carrots are rich in beta-carotene. It is a compound the body changes into vitamin A. Also, it protects the eyes from the sun and lowers the chances of cataracts or any eye problem.
- It lowers the risk of cancer. The main types of antioxidants in carrots are carotenoids and anthocyanins. They have the power to fight off harmful free radicals in your body.
- It boosts your immune system. The vitamin C in carrots helps your body build antibodies that defend your immune system. With this, it can prevent infections, and helps your body take in and use iron.
- They help constipation. Try munching raw carrots if you are having trouble going to the toilet. It’d help you ease constipation and keep you regular with its high fibre content.
- It controls diabetes. Carrot is a non-starchy vegetable. So, people with diabetes are advised to take more of it because it can help to keep blood sugar level under control.
- They strengthen your bones. Carrots contain calcium and vitamin k, both of which are important for bone health.
The above are some health benefits of carrots. However, you are advised not to eat too much of beta-carotene because it can make your skin turn an orange-yellow colour. The condition is called carotene Mia. It is harmless though, and can be treated.
